    age/grade? Typical or special needs? New grade 1 kiddo who hasn’t adjusted to school yet? Shy? Something going on at home? Think I can put any more question marks in this comment? :-P …

    I agree that the above questions are all important factors! Most likely I would give that student some space (he/she is not being disruptive) and periodically invite him or her back to participate.
